Plug speakers in front of computer and play an audio CD. Did the speakers work there?

Check sound card:

1. Check drivers. Make sure that drivers for the card are installed properly. Reinstall as necessary.
2. Check device manager for conflicts. Change resources as necessary to resolve conflicts
3. Reseat sound card.
